The Legend of Tarzan

By Clayton

Friday, after a long day of work, a heavy workout, a visit to the barbershop, and a meeting with one of my college professors, I decided to quickly stop at one of my customers in the mall to hand over a device I had borrowed for testing and was ready to start my weekend. Not that I had any wild weekend plans… those days are long over. I have lots of schoolwork to do.

In the mall I came RSA and we spontaneously decided to catch a movie. I was at first reluctant, because I tend to fall asleep during the movies, and since it was a long day the chance was huge, but I tagged along anyways. We decided to watch The Legend of Tarzan. We had to wait for another friend to arrive, as he was also about to go to the movies. Luckily it wasn’t very crowded and we found perfect seats in the middle of the third row.

the-legend-of-tarzan-teaser-1The movie was a lot better than I expected it to be. I had heard about the movie and seen the actors on talk shows to promote the movie, but I had no actual intension to go see it. Not for any particular reason, it just didn’t spark my attention. However, the movie was actually very good and different than I expected it to be. I expected talking monkeys and simply a movie remake of the Disney version of Tarzan. It wasn’t.

The only thing about the movie that bothered me is that Jane Porter, Tarzan’s wife, was American in the movie. I always thought she was British. I wasn’t the only one who noticed this, so when I came home I decided to Google this. It turns out that Jane indeed was American in the original Tarzan.

“As a young adult, Tarzan meets a young American woman, Jane Porter. She, her father, and others of their party are marooned on exactly the same coastal jungle area where Tarzan’s biological parents were twenty years earlier. “ Source: Wikipedia

Whatever, I grew up with Disney… She will forever be British in my mind.

Anyways, it was a good movie and go see it if you can 🙂

Is Jon Snow really dead?

By Clayton

Is Jon Snow really dead?
Here’s is what I think.

john-snowYES, Jon Snow is dead! He got stabbed – how many times again?- So yes, he is dead.

However, I do believe he will come back. How?
Well, one of the first season 6 trailers, may have been a spoilers. Where what-what-is-the-name-of-that-paralyzed-Stark-kid-again had a premonition, in which Jon died. So I guess a lot from season 6 has not happened yet. Meaning, Jon could still be alive and his death can be avoided.

Another theory is that the red woman, Melisandre, will somehow bring him back to live. And let’s face it, that wouldn’t be the craziest thing happening on Game of Thrones. The woman gave birth to a demon for God’s sake.

Either way, the producers and promotors have done a great job to protect this mystery so far. Not one filming picture including Jon has leaked nor has Kit Harington appeared on any Talk Show the entire year. Guess we just have to wait a few more hours to find out.

To keep everyone extra anxious (and to keep the ratings up of course), I bet they will not reveal anything about Jon until the end of the episode or the second episode of season 6. Or maybe if they are really cruel, make us wait a few more week.

And if he really, really, really is dead… I will stop watching… or at least try not to get attached to a character, because they might end up dead anyways.

The Fault In Our Stars

By Clayton

The_Fault_in_Our_StarsThe Fault In Our Stars… another one of those overly-dramatic love story that created a hype among readers and movie-lovers. What is it with this world and its morbid fascination with love and tragedy?

Last November, during my flight from Suriname to The Netherlands, this movie was on the flight playlist and I decided to watch it, after I had heard so much about it. Since I had 9 hours to kill, I thought why the hell not? However… I fell asleep in about 15 minutes within the movie. #FAIL

6 months later, on yet another night when I had nothing better to do, I decided to try again.
This time I managed to get through the entire movie without my eyes begging for some rest.

I must say that I can understand the tears that this book/movie causes. The story line is messed up and teaches you that we live in a cruel and heartless world. Dead is inevitable and the sooner we accept this fact, the less hard the idea will be to deal with it.

For me it was not the whole life, death and love part of the entire story that triggered the emotional side of my brain. It was more the topic of loss of hope and that desperation that made me my eyes wobble.

I am not one to cry during movies, but when the protagonist heard that her one dying wish of going to Amsterdam would probably not be fulfilled I had to restrain myself. I cannot stand to watch the moment when someone loses hope in their dreams. Also the scenes in Amsterdam did make me lose all my usual skepticism. The moment I recognized the streets they were on (at Leidseplein) that’s where I lost it.

Who knew… Maybe I am human after all. 🙂

Kamelot – Haven

By Clayton

Kamelot has recently released yet another masterpiece of an album, called HAVEN and once again… I am in love with this piece of musical art. Kamelot’s music needs no convincing in my book; their music is just amazing. So far I have loved all albums. The only exception would maybe be Poetry for the Poisoned.

But back to HAVEN.

Kamelot - Haven

This is the second album with Tommy Karevik as the band’s vocalist and once again Tommy has proven to be a great successor to the previous singer. Such a powerful voice that will make your tingle when he pours out those strong notes and he will make you go all emotional with the lower sensitive notes. That guy can probably sing the phone book and it will sound great.

I have been listening to HAVEN constantly since the release and the songs are also starting to linger in my head when I am not listening to it. After having listened to the album for a couple of times I am also able to sing-a-long to most songs. I have also pick out my favorite tracks (so far).

  • Fallen Star
  • Insomnia
  • Veil of Elysium
  • Under Grey Skies
  • My Therapy
  • End of Innocence
  • Liar Liar (Wasteland Monarchy)
  • Revolution

These are the songs that I constantly keep putting on repeat.

The album can be described as a mixture of the previous albums Silverthorn and Ghost Opera. Probably should have been named “Ghost Thorn” or “Silver Opera”, but I guess HAVEN was a much better fit. 😉

Looking at the band’s Facebook page, it seems that they album is also doing great on the music charts, which is well deserved. Congratulations KamNation \m/

Movies & TV My thoughts on...

Today I went to see the movie Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is one of my favorite actresses so I just had to see it. THAT… and there seems to be a hype around this movie on social media sites, so I needed to find out what all the fuss is about.

I can quite understand the fuss, because I thought it was a nice movie. Maybe not GREAT, but nice and you should surely go watch it if you get the chance. Disney sure wants you to get sympathy for its villains lately. I am also very happy that they are trying to get rid of this “true love” crap. Maybe there is hope for young girls after all?

The movie has lots of great visual effects and I am happy that I went to see it in 3D. I just watched a few behind the scenes videos on Youtube and there sure have been added a LOT of digital scenery. I loved it, and actually wouldn’t mind watching it again in 3D.

I’ve wanted to see this movie ever since it came out, but 1. I had been incredibly busy and 2. No one had time to watch it with me or already had seen it. Luckily I was chatting with a former colleague/friend of mine this week and we made plans to go watch it together.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

By Clayton

My friends and I wanted to go to the movies today. As I haven’t been to the cinema in months I was more than willing to. The movie we originally wanted to see we weren’t able to, because I had to attended a class until 20.30hr, so instead we went at 21.00hr and picked “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” as the movie for the night. After all, any movie starring Ben Stiller had to be funny, right?

The_Secret_Life_of_Walter_Mitty_posterWARNING: SPOILER ALERT!!

The movie was relatively boring. I even heard someone in the row behind me snoring, which I can understand. I am surprised that is stayed awake throughout the entire movie, because I tend to fall asleep in the cinema.

I didn’t really get the entire story line, but I would have loved it if it did NOT have a happy ending. I was almost relating to the character that Ben Stiller plays. A guy that dreams a lot, making sceneries in his head, falling in love, not getting the one he falls in love with, trying to make everyone happy, working hard to achieve a certain goal… I sort of felt sorry for him. But in the end, he still gets to be with the one he loved, which makes it a typical movie ending. *boo*

I’m not saying that there weren’t any funny moment, or that you shouldn’t go see it, it’s just one of those you-only-need-to-see-that-once-and-then-it’s-more-than-enough kind of movies

X-factor results are like my love life

By Clayton

As I sit here watching yet another shocking The X-factor USA result show I realize that this show is exactly like my love life: shocking, unpredictable and disappointing.

You know how on The X-factor you have this one singer that is really, really, like-seriously-really-good and you are for sure that they will end up in the finals and might possibly even win? Week after week, they give another stellar performance and there seems no end to this flame of success… but suddenly somewhere close to the end of the season, just when you have become comfortable with the idea that this person is THE ONE that has the X-factor and will surely be around next week gets VOTED off.

x-factor-top-6-results-recap*jaw drops* 😮
Eyes wobble -_-
Tears :’(

Sound familiar?
Though so!

That’s exactly how it goes in my life. I meet someone new. Think “OMG I have never felt like this before”…. This one is a keeper. And each week things improve. It all seems great. This one is heading to the finish line…. And suddenly… just like X-factor… fate takes a 90 degree turn and *poef* it’s over… VOTED out of my life… the dream has ended.

Just like the contestant who stands there completely speechless and in shock, I stand there… wondering what went wrong? How could this be over? Confidence destroyed. Dream shattered. Heart broken. The journey has ended in a dead-end!

Yes… and recently fate has decided to “vote” someone out of my life again. 🙁

Epica Retrospect movie premiere

By Clayton

I just came from the Dutch “Epica Retrospect” movie premiere, which will be officially out on Blu Ray and DVD as of today (November 8th, 2013). The movie premiere was in Bioscoop Zien in Eindhoven.

NOW let the record show: I did NOT especially fly over for this movie premiere. Now THAT would be absurd – even for me. Haha. Nah, I had already planned to fly over to this part of the world in October, but that was not possible, until November. The movie premiere was also in November, so that was a nice bonus to be at the premiere of a concert movie that I had also attended 7 months ago.

The movie of course does NOT compare to the real feeling of that magical night on March 23th, 2013, but it was still very nice to be there and see all the loyal Epicans (that were mostly also there) again. Also very cool that the entire band was there (besides Simone). Got my picture taken with all of them and bought my signed copy of the DVD!

The eagerly awaited break!

By Clayton

SummerEscapeTime to blow off the dust of this blog.

It has been a while since I’ve typed in a few new words.
Actually I have been writing… a lot actually… sadly, not the kind I prefer.
I’ve had the busiest time these last few weeks (months?), but finally it’s over… sort of.

The school break is here. It’s the equivalent of what they call in the US “summer vacation”. But since my college is anything from ordinary it’s not really a break. It’s more like the calm before the storm. I will not really try to analyze it too much. Let’s just say the long awaiting and much deserved time of freedom is here, and although it’s short I will enjoy every second of it as much as I possibly can. My eagerly awaited break! 🙂

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This so called “eagerly awaited break” is just me getting more than 4-5 hours of sleep a day – as I usually do – and spending most of the time that I am awake (and not at work) behind my laptop catching up on the tons of TV series/shows and movies that I have little to any time for. Yes, I am a mayor TV series/ movie geek in case you didn’t know already.

TV has thought me more than school ever has, is what I always say 🙂

A few weeks I finished watching Sex and the City, after binge watching that for weeks. Finished the fifth season on True Blood a few days ago, started with The Walking Dead a few days ago and finished the first season on Friday and also I’ve started with the much-talked-about show Game of Thrones. And those are the “mayor” series. I have tons of what I call “minor series” to watch, which mostly sitcoms are. I love them all. I also watch lots of the movies which I have not been able to see in the cinema due to a very busy schedule.

But don’t think that ALL I do is sit around watching series… it’s what I mostly do, but not all. I do have a life you know… sort of :p

This is also the perfect time to spend with your friends, especially in the weekend. Ring each other up, see what one is doing, call the other over, go out, hang to getter, go to the cinema…. Just enjoy life. Life is short and we gotta enjoy those moments we have as much as we possibly can.
